Settlement Day!

Tuesday, June 4, 2013

We kicked off the month of June today with one of the biggest moments in our young newlywed lives. We closed on our very first home!
This has been a long time coming for us and we couldn't be happier!

Our house hunting journey actually began over a year ago when we decided that we wanted to try to buy our first home before we got married. We had about seven months until the wedding when we decided to start looking. I dreamed of finding an adorable little home, moving in just before our wedding in September, and living happily ever after. I remember thinking, how hard could the process be?

We started our search early in the spring of 2012 and saw dozens of homes. Unfortunately, it was not as easy as I had originally thought it would be. We struggled with the process quite a bit.  I found my dream home (or so I thought) at least three times and had my heart broken over and over as the homes were quickly sold right out from under our feet.

The truth is, we didn't realize that we weren't really ready to commit to a mortgage quite yet. In the months we spent house hunting, we were able to narrow down exactly what it is we really wanted in a home, but the harsh reality was, we couldn't afford that big of a committment. We aren't the type of couple to just take a giant leap without knowing every possible consequence. We are planners and we like to make our decisions thoughtfully and carefully. We were crushed, but decided to put the search on hold until after the wedding. We signed a year lease on our first apartment and decided to look again after the new year.

A couple of job changes, a promotion, and a wedding later, we knew we were ready to buy!

This time, we came into the game much more educated and knew that the right house would eventually come along if we were patient.

Well as it turns out, we didn't have to stay patient very long.

We started looking at homes at the end of January and after only one week, we had found our match.

We definitely did not expect to find a house as fast as we did and we knew that making an offer would be tricky. We still had our lease to consider (which ends in July) and waiting almost five months for settlement was not our ideal situation but we didn't really have a choice.

Our agent, Joe, was wonderful. He sat us down, went through all of the possibilities, and took the time to answer every question we had. It's not like we had ever purchased a house before, so we were super thankful to have him essentially "hold our hands" through the entire process.

He contacted the seller's agent once we were ready to move forward and it turned out the house already had another offer. It had only been on the market for a little over a week! We were shocked and a bit terrified that we could lose out. We already knew our June settlement would not be the most attractive and now we also had to compete with another buyer. Fortunately, with Joe's guidance, we were able to come up with a great offer and the sellers accepted!

We were absolutely thrilled, but we knew that there was still a lot that had to be done before the house was considered "ours." This is where the patience came in.

It feels so good to say that now, after many months of waiting, as of noon today, WE ARE OFFICIALLY HOMEOWNERS!

We've got the keys in our hands and paint on our minds. I am planning to post photos of the house in the next couple of days, so stay tuned!

  1. Congratulations!!!!!!
Your own home is the best feeling in the world. We bought a tiny little place and moved in in Feb this year. I don't care that it's small - it's all mine!

    1. Thank you!! We are so excited! And you're right, it's just so nice to have a place to call your own :)
