The Transformation Begins

Monday, July 1, 2013

So far, everything has been coming along super smoothly and before we know it, moving day will be upon us! We're only five days away!

We had the hardwood started this past weekend and things are really beginning to change around the house. I say started because what was supposed to be a two day project (Friday and Saturday) turned into four and it will not actually be completed until tomorrow morning. This wasn't the only unpleasant surprise we encountered either. Much to our dismay, not only did the time frame of the work double but so did the cost. I will be doing a full post on all of that later.

For now, I wanted to share some of the photos of the little things we have been working on over the last week or so.

It's so exciting to see how everything is slowly transforming. I think having the floors done will show the biggest change but even just having some color on the walls and a few new fixtures has made such a difference.

Here are a few pictures of the freshly painted rooms and the fixtures we changed. I apologize in advance for the quality of the pictures. The light gets worse as you scroll down. I realized after I uploaded them that I should really start taking pictures with a real camera instead of my iPhone. Oops!

Notice the yellow light bulbs? We found out the hard way that the previous owners had the right idea. When we first installed the new fixture, we didn't really like the way the yellow light looked. We tried changing it to a regular 60-watt light bulb and the minute that we turned it on, every bug in the neighborhood flocked to our front porch. They were everywhere - on our door, our light, our siding. And every time we opened the door, they would land on us or fly into the house. We couldn't stand it and we found out after a little research that bugs are not attracted to yellow light. We decided that dealing with a funny looking light is much better than sharing our new home with all those bugs.

Unfortunately I don't have any "before" photos so you will have to use your imagination for these.

We are hoping to start working on the trim soon - ESPECIALLY the trim in the master bedroom. Take a look at the detail on these babies.
Yea, it definitely needs some updating.

This fall we are also hoping to install crown molding in each of the rooms to give it a bit of a more finished look.

I wish I had more to update you on, but honestly, our lives have been completely consumed with work at the house. We have been over there just about every day and have been pushing really hard. It will be nice to relax soon! Hope you had a nice weekend!

  1. I had no idea about the yellow lights but we have the same problem with the bugs! I am going to be swapping my bulbs out to see if that helps, thanks so much for the tip :)

    1. It really works! At least for us it seemed to. We only have a few gnats that still hang around but it's much better than all of the beetles, moths, mosquitos, and other summer bugs. I hope it works for you too! :)
