Drying Out

Thursday, May 1, 2014

Holy cow, it's MAY! And thank god it's finally here.

You know the saying "April showers bring May flowers?" I've decided that this year the phrase should be changed to "April storms bring May floods."

It's literally been raining here for four days. And I don't mean like a little drizzle or mist, I mean like downpour. There have been entire roads washed away, homes destroyed, and people killed. Who knew that this much rain could cause such major damage. There was even a huge landslide in Baltimore that took out a major section of a residential area near the CSX railroad. I know there are many other states that are going through the same thing right now and at even worse scales than we are, so I can't even imagine how they are dealing with all this. I'm also praying for everyone in those states affected by all of the tornadoes from this same weather system. It's amazing how many people have been affected across the country.

Last night, we walked down to the basement to do some laundry to find that our storage room had started to fill with water from a couple of cracks in the foundation. The hard part was figuring out exactly where those cracks were so that we can fill them with hydraulic cement this weekend.

So instead of relaxing, we spent our evening tearing out drywall and soaking up puddles with every towel we had. Fortunately, Mike had these absorbent snake thingies that work really well to catch all the water coming in. We put a bunch of them out before we went to bed to prevent any major flooding.

The ground outside is so saturated, it honestly doesn't surprise me that we had this problem. I'm just glad that we were able to move all of our bins out of the room in time and there was no damage to any of our stuff.

See if you can spot little Carlisle hiding in this photo. He cracks me up.

Since we don't have carpet or anything down there, the clean up was super easy and didn't take that long. We are just thankful that so far this is all we've had to deal with. It could have been a lot worse.

The weather guy said this morning that we are supposed to see the end of the rain today and hopefully more sunshine than clouds. I'm praying he's right because I think we all need a little break!

  1. Whenever you have a crack or leak somewhere and need to find it in the wall or like a pool use food coloring and wherever it gets sucked in shows the leak...usually

    1. Omg I saw a picture of the harbor this morning... all brown and gross :( And thank you, I hope things clear up soon. We are going to try and patch everything up this weekend. But hey, at least the sun is shining now! That should help a little bit :)
